The first reports had not even
been made public that striking images showing the scale of the
cataclysm were already broadcast. The second major earthquake of
our time (9.3 on the Richter scale): a submarine
tremor made the ground vibrate during 3 minutes triggering in
places 20 metre high waves, all the elements of a major crisis
are combined.
Indonesia suffers the heaviest toll with about
178000 dead or missing and dozens of thousands of
wounded.
Several years of reconstruction will be necessary to
bring back devastated cities to their previous aspect. It is also
necessary to work so that the local populations are better
informed, educated and prepared to seismic hazard, Sumatra being
situated on an active faultline which will cause, sooner or
later, another major earthquake.
So, it is to promote
reconstruction and disaster reduction that our association,
International Emergency Team France wishes to participate in and
bring support to programmes already launched by Secours Populaire
Limousin as long as our competences can be relied on.
Our
intervention specifically involves:
- Civil protection
expertise
- Logistic and technical support to the Lambada
healthcare centre project.
A review of completed actions as
well as current and future projects were made during a mission of
Secours Populaire which took place from 16th to 25th of June 2005.
