The 27th of May 2006 Java earthquake
From May 29th to June 7th 2006, a team of our association, made of 5 emergency rescue specialists supported by Secours Populaire Limousin, headed to Java, few hours after the earthquake hit the city.
As soon as they arrived, the members of our team were welcomed by our local partners of Secours Populaire Limousin and could quickly go to the area nearest to the epicentre.During 10 days, they took care of the wounded and evacuated them in cooperation with Indonesian rescuers. During this mission, 412 victims ere attended and 17 seriously wounded victims benefited from sanitary evacuation.
Our team worked in cooperation with the UN coordination unit and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to rescue the victims, from the wounded to the infected
We also identified the totally destroyed city of Sabrangan where we provided food and logistic aid to the most affected people. This rescue action will be further intensified in the coming weeks with a reconstruction programme in the district of Bantul starting with food aid and accomodation facilities.
After 10 days of efficient but hard work under a hot and wet atmosphere, the team came back in France but kept the firm intention to stay committed to the relief of a population who keeps smiling despite its desperate situation. |
