SEISMIC HAZARD AWARENESS RAISING

The earthquake simulator was the object of a specific use in Guadeloupe from May 30th untill June 8th, 2005, within the framework of a seismic hazard awareness campaign in professional structures, schools and within the population.

Among them: EDF (Electricity of France), Welfare Services, The SDIS (Guadeloupe fire and rescue service), The Education Authority, Air Caraïbes, RFO TV and radio, the DDE(Environmental Services Department), SA HLM (Council House) , local elected members and executives, teachers and hazard specialists .

National Education Authorities also took part in the campaign with more than 300 children from kindergarten seniors to senior primary school pupils. There were also many children coming outside school supervision. They all enjoyed the earthquake simulator experiment.

A survey was conducted and participants interviewed before and after the experiment.
- The number of experimenters ( more than one thousand) and the questions they asked showed the population's need for training and information about seismic hazard.
- The great majority of participants found the experiment positive and said they are keen to repeat it.
- Most of the people who came to face their fear of earthquakes including those who already experienced earthquakes in the past, found the experiment positive.
- The tremors felt on the earthquake simulator can be used to reasess people's system of reference, their benchmarks, and therefore provide professionals with the means to implemenf management and reduction measures to tackle a crisis
- One of the experiment's interest is to help spread reduction measures among the population. It was done especially for stress management .
- The experiment results in a growing need for training in crisis management and response to tremors
This experiment is positive and is really worth repeating . It gives the opportunity to undergo safe individual tests and provides additional information about earthquakes and related damage but above all it teachs how to respond to major or minor tremors.
